One of boxing’s biggest stars returns to the ring on
Saturday, September 22nd at Wembley Stadium in London, England, as IBF,
WBO, and WBA champion Anthony Joshua (21-0, 20 KOs) takes on Russian
contender Alexander Povetkin (34-1, 24 KOs). This is a mandatory title
defense for Joshua, as Povetkin was the WBA’s #1 ranked contender. Fans
are surely disappointed that it’s not Anthony Joshua vs. Deontay Wilder,
but maybe it’ll happen in 2019. Maybe.

Joshua perhaps disappointed with a unanimous decision win
over Joseph Parker, as there was seldom any meaningful action
throughout the fight, with the Brit going the distance for the first
time in his pro career. It’s unlikely that’ll be the case against
Povetkin, who may still be a top-10 heavyweight, but he is a heavy
underdog who had a major scare against David Price before getting the KO
win. If Povetkin turns back the clock to his better days from several
years ago, this could be more competitive than expected. Otherwise, the
39-year-old is surely overmatched at this stage of his career. Still,
this should be entertaining to watch, and it’ll be a big crowd on hand
cheering Joshua at Wembley.
